How about an angel gets set on fire?
Is that why hey bell so many cats – to replace the dewinged and burnt angels?
I bet there’s an official word for “de-winged”?

And I like the angel set on fire thing. One of my other options was “you make the the baby Jesus cry.” But after your suggestion, i think perhaps “a baby angel bursts into flames” might work well.
